Frequently Asked Questions From Students.

Q: What's the weather like in Halifax, Nova Scotia?

A:  "It depends!" In the summer, typically it is beautiful and quite warm (for a Nova Scotian), maybe about 20+ degrees. Then add in the humidity and it can go up to a melting 30+! Winter, snow, snow, lots of snow, and it's COLD, bring a weather coat!

Q: Do I have time for a part-time job?

A: Some of our classmates are currently working part-time jobs. This answer totally depends on yourself though and how flexible the job can be. Parts of each semester are much busier than others, as a student you will need to consider making time for studying, assignments, group meetings, lab times, grocery shopping, etc!

Q: What about time for extracurricular activities?

A: Certainly! But again, this will depend on yourself. There are many intramural sports available for students to play and times vary depending on the sport!

Q: What can I expect in terms of class size?

A: Class sizes are pretty small! The class of 2017 has a class size of 62!

Q: What are the professors like?

A: Small class sizes and long lectures allow you and your professors to get to know each other on a name-to-name basis.

Q: Do I have time to become involved in anything? Committees?

A: There are many committees you can be involved with! You can choose to have a big role or a small role. Check out our committees page to see what may interest you.

Q: 22 consecutive months?!

A: It seems like a lot, but you get wknds, holidays/vacations, etc. Things will be so busy during your time here that time will fly!

Q: What is a Net ID?

A: It'll be the first two letters of your name followed by 6 numbers. For example, Ot012345. This will be used for your email, your internet access, everything Dal involved!

Q: What is a Banner ID?

A: It's basically just your student number (identity). It'll be B00 followed by 6 numbers. For example, B00123456. This will be used usually around registration type of things (intramurals).

Q: I don't have a vehicle, is that okay?

A: Yes! To some it's actually much preferred to not bring a vehicle with you, unfortunately Dalhousie does not have very many dedicated student parking spots. Halifax has transit bus', but they are very busy so not always on time, but you just need to plan accordingly! Busiest times are 7:30-9am(Classes for many students start in this range), 12pm-2pm (lunch), 3:30pm-5:30pm (Classes for all students are out).
